Pojorâta Monastery – 3D modeling

3D modeling of the blue chapel at the Monastery of St. John Jacob Corlățeni in Pojorâta.
Demolished in September 2022.
The decision to demolish it was made due to a fungus that attacked the wood from which the place of worship was built.

Using a 3D Model to Manage a Complex Building such as the Pojorâta Monastery

  1. Documentation and Preservation:
    • Precise Details: 3D models allow architectural details to be captured with high precision, including ornaments and textures, thus preserving valuable information for posterity.
    • Digital Archiving: A digital copy of the monastery ensures that information about its structure is preserved even if the physical building suffers irreparable damage.
  2. Restoration and Reconstruction:
    • Detailed Planning: 3D models provide an accurate representation of the monastery’s current condition, helping restorers plan restoration work with precision.
    • Structural Analysis: Digital models enable simulations to assess structural stability and identify areas requiring urgent intervention.
  3. Virtual Tourism:
    • Global Accessibility: A 3D model of the monastery can be used to create virtual tours, making it possible for people around the world to explore the complex without having to physically travel there.
  4. Asset Management:
    • Continuous Monitoring: 3D models can be updated periodically to monitor the condition of buildings and identify deterioration in real time.
    • Space Planning: A digital model helps with efficient space management, including visitor traffic and the use of adjacent land.

The Importance of Creating a Digital Copy of a Building on the Verge of Collapse or Demolition

  1. Preserving Heritage:
    • Cultural Memory: 3D models preserve the cultural and historical memory of buildings that are disappearing, providing future generations with access to valuable information.
    • Education and Research: Students and researchers can study buildings that no longer exist in physical form, using digital models as an educational resource.
  2. Documentation for Restoration:
    • Reference for Restorers: 3D models provide an accurate reference for restoration work, ensuring that original details are respected during the reconstruction process.
  3. Promotional Tool:
    • Fundraising: A digital copy can be used to raise funds for restoration by presenting the detailed condition and intervention needs.
