Brief history:
Turnu Roșu was originally a military defensive structure, built by the Saxons in 1360, near Boița, Sibiu County. It was completed in 1370 under the leadership of King Louis I of Hungary, with the purpose of guarding the Olt River gorge, being located near the old border with Wallachia.
The castle witnessed many battles, especially with the Ottomans. In fact, legend has it that the name Turnu Rosu (Red Tower) comes from the blood of the Ottomans who fell in battle, with which the Wallachians and Saxons painted the walls and towers of the fortress, but it probably comes from the fact that it was built of fired brick.
The first cartographic mention of Turnu Rosu belongs to Nicolaus Cusanus, in the map drawn up
between 1450 and 1455.
The castle functioned as an orphanage from 1917 to 2003, and from 2003 to 2023 it functioned as a psychiatric hospital.
Currently, the project “Recovering the cultural identity of the historical monument, Turnu Roșu Castle in Boița – Southern Gate of Transylvania” is underway, with the aim of ultimately transforming the building into a leisure and cultural-educational facility.
